A one-month internship in Indonesia’s English-language media in January-February next year was an unmissable opportunity for four Swinburne University journalism students.

Kate Lancaster, Callum Halliday, William Ryan and Brooke Grebert-Craig have been chosen for the six-week Journalism Professional Practicum – two weeks language tuition and industry seminars, plus a month-long internship – run by the Australian Consortium for in-country Indonesian studies (ACICIS), of which Swinburne is a member.

The $3000 tuition fees for each will be paid by Colombo Plan funds, following a successful application by the journalism program.

ACICIS has run such programs for 20 years, but 2014 was the first year Swinburne participated. Rachel Hayter returned with a portfolio of work from her placement with KBR newsagency and obtained a job within two weeks.

The practicum is offered under the auspices of journalism’s Foreign Correspondent unit as a summer study tour unit. The coordinating lecturer is Sue Green. For inquiries contact her at suegreen@swin.edu.au.
