A documentary short film @HOME produced by the New Media, Ageing, and Migration research team was screened in competition at several international film festivals this year including the Charlie Chaplin Film Festival, the Fingal Film Festival, and the Heart of Gold Film Festival.

The film, directed by Media Studies lecturer Liam Burke, charts how older Irish people in Melbourne make use of social media to narrow the distance between Ireland and Australia. With interviewees who arrived as early as 1949, the film features a host of Irish-Australians who recount the challenges of sparse communication when they first arrived and how they now navigate the hurdles of social media with steely determination and good humour. The film is the first outcome from a research team that includes Dr John Hookam, Dr Glenda Ballantyne and Dr Burke as chief investigators.
