Journalism hosted Swinburne’s first ever study tour to the Middle East in June when 13 students travelled to the United Arab Emirates and Jordan to report on a wide range of social and political issues.
The students learnt about Arabic culture, met reporters and visited several of the region’s news outlets. They also filed stories from many of the sites they visited, including refugee camps and remote rural villages.
The tour was designed to closely replicate the experience of reporting from the field and the students built a website: http://www.theforeigncorrespondent.org. The Foreign Correspondent Study tour was conceived by Journalism academic Saba Bebawi and was co-led by journalism program director, Andrew Dodd. In 2016, it will be held in conjunction with Sydney’s University of Technology, where Saba has been working since July this year.
