It was another year of high-profile events for the Writing discipline, with lots of industry collaborations increasing the appeal of our courses for students wanting to break into the publishing world.
Students have the chance to work from a hot desk at the prestigious Wheeler Centre in Melbourne for one month, putting them smack in the centre of the Victorian arts and culture industry. This year’s Swinburne Hot Desker, Stephanie Hughes, especially loved being surrounded by the rolling range of writers and publishing events that put a potential job opportunity at her feet every day.
Other industry interaction options include work experience with the Small Press Network annual conference and attendance to their networking sessions with key players in Melbourne’s thriving boutique publishing scene; workshops with well-known writers such as Vikki Petraitis; and the chance to perform at the Emerging Writers’ Festival. Hot on the heels of the successful Swinburne Writers Festival, students will also have the option to help out with the internationally significant Australian Association of Writing Programs conference that is being hosted in AMDC.
